London, June 1966. Eleven minutes past four, a bench on the Embankment. A man arrives one minute later than instructed and exactly on time by the only clock that matters. He carries a newspaper he will never read. She is already there, behind dark glasses, and she does not look at him. His name is Tom Ellery — or rather, it isn't; someone else has been wearing that name for a year and a half, and Tom doesn't know it yet. Hers is Irina. A routine handoff, an envelope, a few whispered stories — the choreography both services have rehearsed for years.

Then she says a code name that belongs to a dead man, and in the space of eleven minutes two intelligence officers discover that the operation they were sent to perform is not the one that was planned for them. Somewhere above, on both sides of the Curtain, their ending has already been written. The only move left is the one nobody scheduled: disappear together. Through the taxi ranks of Villiers Street and the lockers of Waterloo, onto the 6:52 from Paddington in amber light, down a branch line to a shuttered house on the Thames — four days of borrowed clothes and borrowed names, a lunch performed for watching eyes, a skiff drifting above Temple Lock, and a Sunday paper that will decide everything. They have until Sunday. It always comes.

The music is the soundtrack of those four days. Deep upright bass and deliberate brushed drums set a slow, cold pulse. Muted trumpet carries a melody that knows more than it reveals. Smoky saxophone drifts through the low register; vibraphone and soft electric piano glow like one lamp lit at the back of a house. Beneath them, a full orchestra — tense strings, English horn, bass clarinet, ghostly harp glissandos — moves the story from fog to river to bells. Analog tape warmth, wet footsteps, faint radio static, and, at the very end, church bells across a Sunday morning. Cool. Restrained. Quietly devastating.
